The government of Mozambique has approved new minimum wages for eight sectors with immediate effect.
For agriculture, flora, hunting and forestry, the minimum wage rose by 13 percent, but for the sugar business the rise was in the order 14 per cent. Thus, the minimum wage rose from 1,315.00 Meticais (MT) to 1,486.00 MT for agriculture, flora, hunting and forestry, and 1500.00 MT for the sugar sector.

Riversdale coal resources in Mozambique rise to 4.0 billion tones |

Riversdale Mining has announced an updated for its Benga Coal Project in the central Mozambican district of Moatize. Riversdale says based on the data collected from recent drilling activities, a coal resource of 4.0 billion tonnes has been estimated.
Of this amount, 1,033.9 million tonnes is the combined total for Measured and Indicated Resources and 893.4 million tonnes of these are at a depth of less than 500m. This coal resource represents an increase of 90% over the previous resource announced in September 2008.

Mozambique a tourist destination of reference |

Tourism Minister, Fernando Sumbana, says Mozambique is now a tourist destination of international reference. He says that, among other things, the country has developed a product oriented to a very specific segment, which is of those tourists who select rigorously select the place they intend to go to, usually a place of peace, tranquility and where they can enjoy a very intensive contact with nature and communities.

World Bank announces measures “to mitigate” impact of world economic crisis on Africa |

In order to mitigate the impacts on Africa of the economic crisis, the World Bank says it has been scaling up its lending and policy advice to minimize the drop in GDP growth, with a focus on poverty-reducing activities, safety nets, infrastructure support, and budget support to compensate for the loss in private capital flows. In middle-income countries, where the impact of the crisis is likely to be short term, the Bank has prepared a $2 billion IBRD loan to support South Africa’s power-sector reform program, and has supplemented a development policy loan to Mauritius with a “deferred drawdown option” (DDO) which the country can call on as necessary.

CTA praises business climate |

The IV Conference of the Confederation of Mozambican Economic Associations (CTA) in the centre of the country has acknowledged there is has been good progress in the struggle for a better business environment in that part of Mozambique. Delegates praised the prevailing constructive and healthy dialogue between the private and public sector.

3,000 jobs created in the 1st quarter of 2009 |

Mozambican labour minister, Helena Taipo says that despite the global financial crisis, the number of jobs is growing in Mozambique.
Taipo says only in the first quarter this year three thousand new jobs were generated in the country, against 508 losses.
The minister was speaking on the sidelines of the commemorations of the 90 th anniversary of the International Labour Organization. |
